Terms of service
These are the terms between you and Ardena for the use of als. Using the app means accepting them. They are written to be read, not to be survived.
01 / What it is
A study companion, not a shortcut.
You upload your own coursework and als answers your questions from that material, citing where each answer came from. It is a tool for revising, not a substitute for attending, reading or thinking.
- It reads one library, yours. Answers are built from the material filed under a unit, and nothing else is consulted.
- It cites what it used. Every answer names the lecture and page behind it. That is there so you can check it, and checking it is the point.
- It is not your lecturer. als gives no professional, medical, legal or financial advice, and a disagreement between als and your department is one your department wins.
- Academic honesty stays yours. Using als to submit work that is not your own is between you and your institution, and their rules apply whatever ours say.
02 / Your account
One account, one person, one device at a time.
An account is personal. The Friends plan exists for sharing, and it is the only way to do it.
- Created with your mobile number or a Google account. You must be at least 13 years old to hold one.
- Keep your sign-in code to yourself. Anyone who has it can read your coursework.
- Signing in on a new phone signs the previous one out. This is deliberate, and it is what makes a single-user plan mean something.
- Accounts are not to be shared or resold. Doing either is a breach of section 07.
03 / Your material
Your material stays yours.
You keep every right in the notes, files and coursework you upload. What you grant us is the narrow permission needed to run the service, and nothing wider.
The processors we use are named in the privacy policy.
The licence you give us. Permission to store your files, process them so the tutor can answer from them, and show them back to you. It exists to run the service and ends when you delete the material.
What we will not do with it. We do not use your material to train AI models, ours or anyone else’s, and we do not share it with anyone outside the services listed in the privacy policy.
What you are responsible for. Having the right to upload what you upload. Do not upload material you are not permitted to copy, or anything unlawful.
04 / The tutor
It can be wrong, and it shows you where to check.
Answers are generated by an AI model reading your material. Nothing in this section is a disclaimer we hide behind; it is how the thing actually works.
- It can misread. It can miss context, and it can misread a badly scanned page.
- Every answer carries its source so that you can check it. Please do; that one tap is the difference between a citation and a decoration.
- It says when it does not know. If your library has nothing on a topic, als tells you what it does have rather than inventing an answer.
- A grade is not something an app can be answerable for. See section 09.
05 / Plans and payment
Nothing renews behind your back.
Prices are in Kenyan shillings and each plan runs for 30 days. Payment is taken by Paystack, which accepts M-Pesa, Airtel Money and cards.
Each plan has limits on units, pages, questions a day and quizzes, shown in the app and on the pricing page. Reaching a limit pauses that feature until the period rolls over or you move up a plan. Your material is never locked away: you can read, export and delete what you have uploaded on any plan, and after one lapses.
| Plan | Price | Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Free trial | KES 0 for 14 days | One person, once per person, ever |
| Focus | KES 150 / 30 days | One person |
| Synapse | KES 350 / 30 days | One person |
| Friends | KES 1,250 / 30 days | Five people, KES 250 each |
- The trial is once per person. Deleting an account and creating a new one on the same number does not start a second one.
- Plans do not auto-renew. When the 30 days end, access reverts to the free limits until you choose to pay again. No card sits on file and nothing is charged without you starting it.
06 / The Friends plan
A shared bill, not a shared library.
One person pays and receives a code that seats four others. Five people, KES 250 each, and five separate private libraries.
- Whoever pays controls the seats and may free one at any time, which returns that person to the free limits.
- Every member’s coursework stays private to them. The payer cannot see it, and neither can the other members.
- It ends together. If the plan is not renewed, everyone on it returns to the free limits at the same time.
07 / Fair use
The short list of things not to do.
We may suspend or close an account that does these. Where we can, we will warn first and explain why.
- Do not share one account among several people, outside a Friends plan.
- Do not automate, script or resell access, or try to work around the plan limits.
- Do not upload malware, anything unlawful, or somebody else’s personal data without their agreement.
- Do not attempt to break, overload or reverse-engineer the service, or extract another user’s data.
08 / Refunds, and ending it
Leaving is two taps, and your work leaves with you.
The 14-day trial exists so you can decide before paying, which is why a period that has started is not generally refunded.
-
Charged in error
If the service was materially broken, or you were charged in error, write to support@ardena.co.ke within 14 days of the payment and we will put it right.
-
Your statutory rights
Nothing here affects any rights you have under the Consumer Protection Act, 2012.
-
Closing your account
At any time from Settings, or by following the account deletion page. Closing it deletes your coursework, permanently, and on purpose.
-
Closure by us
We may close an account for a serious or repeated breach of section 07.
-
Availability
We aim to keep als running, but it is provided as it is. Features may change and occasionally something will be down. We give notice of planned maintenance where practical, and of any significant change to these terms or to what a plan includes.
09 / Liability and law
What we answer for, and where.
Stated plainly, because a limitation of liability nobody can parse is a limitation nobody agreed to.
What is never limited. Nothing here limits liability for death, personal injury, fraud, or anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.
The cap. Subject to that, our total liability for any claim is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before it arose.
What we are not liable for. Indirect losses, or academic outcomes. A grade is not something an app can be answerable for.
Governing law. These terms are governed by the laws of Kenya, and the courts of Kenya have jurisdiction. If a clause turns out to be unenforceable, the rest stands.
Reaching us
Anything here that reads badly, tell us.
These terms are meant to be understood by the person agreeing to them. If a clause is doing the opposite, that is worth an email.
Applies to als (Ardena Learning System), package com.ardena.als, and to this website. Governed by the laws of Kenya. Last updated 23 August 2026.
